Honestly, no offence but where is your head at? You couldn’t stomache the thought of a rebuild not a month ago and almost dumped it. Let’s say you do it, and you find a deal for 4k paint job, because if it’s not frame off, nobody will pay for it, it’s just a sketch paint job possibly hiding damage... And then your $2000 clutch explodes, where are you at? At that point you’ve got a $1,000 dollar bring a trailer parts car. Maybe..

Paints fine, keep that money, you’ll need it, and there are plenty of mods you could do that actually add value if it’s burning a hole in your pocket. My 2 cents.

Have you read my comments? Cause most of them are helping people with car issues. I generally steer clear of the arguments around here, but being gawker and all I do occasionally get entangled, as do you. I’m not here for that, or to get my zingers in, but again it happens. My original comment was only an insult if you are trying o be insulted or insecure, I made an assumption, and I was wrong, no doubt, and one I would have apologized for if he wasn’t trying to make a capitol case over it. Look at my past comments replying to him, I’ve done nothing but try and help, and there’s a good reason to think he may be jumping into a rash decision, he admits to doing it himself. He wasn’t here, but it’s more of a misunderstanding easily cleared up instead of being a snot about it. I won’t aplogize for my reaction.

Since you have no proof it’s a burner how is your behavior any better? An accusation that I have no way of disproving, and coming from a mod, a brand that easily sticks.

And I did look at your comment history, I was more explaining why the word burner was even introduced to the conversation.

The goal here is to build, improve, or contribute to the community. I’m not one for instantly blocking or banning people. But, seeing as how I spent the time to write, update, and regularly talk about the rules that I posted, I do have some interest in seeing that they are followed, or at least that people attempt to follow them (intentions, though not the best judge of a person, should be a factor).

People abusing you is not an excuse to abuse others, and I’m quite interested in any user here who is calling others a faggot or other similar term as a derogatory. That doesn’t fly here, and I’m sorry you were called that. You (or *anyone* else) can flag comments, and we don’t get a report of who flagged it, just that a comment was flagged, it’s anonymous, and we do check the flags regularly.

ETA: and I appreciate that you help others, or try to. It’s what we want to see as a community. And ideally we’d like criticism to be of the constructive, rather than insulting or derogatory variety.

I have no issue with you calling my comment out of line, it was caustic no doubt. This isn’t an issue for me.

And I only brought up the other comments because well, the moderating (which I’ve never seen any evidence of) is a bit non existant. Not really something I even have a problem with.

My only issue with you and vi, were the burner accusations, which are frankly silly. I mean vi usually is in the same threads handing out advice as well. It does however tick me off a bit when a mod is pointing out the inflammatory conversation with snark and asking for it really. I’m not so self centered to think he has to remember me or anything, but he knows damn well I’m no burner. There’s plenty of evidence of that. So what am I to make of that comment? It’s really not worth arguing over but hopefully you can see my point.

So whatever, I’ll drop it (and frankly this site for awhile) but the gawker comment I made earlier is in reference to the fact that any behavior seems valid as long as it’s the right opinion, and the cult mentality is turning it into a bit of a popularity contest where snark and flippant comments are well and good if your in the club so to speak. Frankly that’s not cultivating a community that I want to be a part of. I’m sure you feel that’s off base, or overblown, but I’m not the first to make the complaint, and the accusation of me being a burner tipped me over. (which what does it mean if not a troll, it implies a second account or a drive by insult account, even if you don’t feel that way, it’s a pretty common defintion, it is certainly used as a derogatory term and was here.) My opinion for whatever it’s worth, good luck to you.

Honestly, you’ve put thought and effort into your responses. And you seem to have a decent head on your shoulders and a penchant for sharing your opinions and knowledge. And can acknowledge when you might have overstepped the lines.

You might be capable of being an ass, but you seem to be capable of holding your own.

So instead of taking this one direction. I’ve got a question for you in the other. If you understand the gist of the rules, and it seems like you do. Would you like to be an author here? I don’t want commenters who always have the same opinions, or who only see one side of something. Ideally, in order to have great conversations, you need to be able to pick something apart and constructively make it better. Communities are the same way.

I hate the Gawker mentality of commenting (irony, I know you well), though I am a fan of snark and sarcasm (family traits), it has to be clever and witty to be good. Otherwise it just looks like everything else.

I’m not saying you get a pass to act like an asshole, or that the rules don’t apply to you. But we have some very strong voices here, I only would ask of you what I ask of them. To behave and at least attempt to follow the spirit if not the letter of the rules (ideally both would be awesome), and when you disagree with someone, approach it like you would with a friend or colleague, not some random internet stranger with a horrible idea (we have plenty of those, and while they shouldn’t be encouraged, unless they are actually harming themselves or others, you can usually tell them without insulting them).

(I’ve got pretty thick skin, but I do have an idealized version of this community, and 99% of the time, I would prefer it to be self-policing, but that 1%? if we don’t see it, we don’t know it happened).

Ill certainly consider it, I have no idea how kinja works, it frankly baffles me, (hence my lack of an av) but I’ve never really tried either.

I dig oppo, but to me there’s such a bizarre mixture of posts here I’m not sure anything I have to say is really going to fit. I don’t even have a Facebook account, and to me oppo is kinda the Facebook of cars and car people. I would occasionally write up a musing on a car or car related culture, but I’m mostly into the technical articles or problem solving, and that’s all I would likely contribute.

With jalopnik kinda expanding its garage section, I’d propose a technical or garage forum, for people to get help or information and I’d contribute my non expert rants and tail chasing there heavily. There are plenty of posts here that would fit in a forum like that.

I didn’t think that idea out at all, so if it isn’t doable, or wouldn’t work, disregard, but I think it would be a good thing, (and in keeping with most car forums,) if it had any traffic, which is a pretty big if.

So I appreciate the offer, and the general diffusing of the situation. I’m not sure how much I’d contribute, but I guess I’m open to the idea, provided kinja is tolerable enough for me, which is obviously doubtful lol.
